Partners
Several partners are involved in Naiad project development either by funding the project, making available their dataset through the system or being directly involved in system implementation and improvement.
CERSAT - Center for Satellite Exploitation and Research
The Center for Satellite Exploitation and Research (CERSAT) is one of the major world data centers for oceanography. It processes, archives and distributes a large amount of data products obtained from satellite remote-sensing, mostly intended to support research activity in various fields (oceanography, meteorology, climatology,...) and operational applications based on space data (weather prediction, ocean circulation, environment monitoring,...).
The CERSAT is a department of the French Institute of Research for the Exploitation of the Sea (Ifremer), located in Brest (France). It is funded through various projects and contracts by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Community. It is also linked to many organizations and institutes, such as the Centre National d'Etude Spatiale (CNES), Meteo-France or the Physical Oceanography Distributed Active Archive Center (PO.DAAC), through several agreements and partnerships.
The CERSAT consists of both data management and research teams, interacting closely to provide new advances in ocean remote-sensing, knowledge and information systems, and improved support to users and applications.
O&SI SAF
For complementing its Central Facilities capability in Darmstadt and taking more benefit from specialized expertise in Member States, EUMETSAT created Satellite Application Facilities (SAFs), based on co-operation between several institutes and hosted by a National Meteorological Service. The Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF) is an answer to the common requirements of meteorology and oceanography for a comprehensive information on the ocean-atmosphere interface. One of the objectives of the OSI SAF is to produce, control and distribute operationally in near real-time OSI SAF products using available satellite data with the necessary Users Support activities.
The partners of O&SI SAF include Météo-France, Met.No, DMI, KNMI and Ifremer/CERSAT. The CERSAT archives and distributes some of O&SI SAF products, mostly related to sea surface temperature and radiative fluxes.
ESA - European Space Agency
The European Space Agency is the main operator of Earth Observation satellites in Europe, together with EUMETSAT. It is responsible for missions such as ERS-1, ERS-2, Envisat or SMOS which are of major importance in oceanography. ESA has supported the development of Naiad system, in particular for the delivery of the ocean products managed at Ifremer/CERSAT in the frame of the existing direct partnership between both institutes (French Processing and Archiving Facility, part of ERS ground segment). These products include altimeter and scatterometer data from ERS, as well as SAR wave measurements from both ERS and ENVISAT.
